I found a kinda pieced-together version of the full show on archive.org and just recently finished watching it. It was really pretty good, if a little hard to follow. What do you think of it?
edit: couldn’t find where i got it from, so i put it in a folder here
Personally I haven’t been able to see the official show, the closest I’ve been to it is the Broadway Idiot documentary. I really wish there was an official release of it.
I have seen this performance if that counts lol. Overall it’s a great time;
As someone who almost got to be a guitarist for a local production on it (before it got canned) I think its pretty neat but its got its issues. Some of the plot can get messy because theres almost no dialog in the actual play and sometimes the vocals on the studio album can be a little cringe
I’ve seen it three times, twice by professionals and once by an amateur group and really enjoyed it twice but the last time (professional) I felt it was becoming very much more “jazz hands” than originally. The cast seemed to have been let loose and were overdoing all the crotch grabbing so it was getting a bit odd. First two times were really good though, and the young amateurs were clearly loving every minute of it.
I saw a local production of it in a small black box theater and I liked it a lot. It was fun watching a musical where all the music was Green Day. I felt proud of them. My only criticism of the story was that I felt like Whatsername was just reduced to a love interest where in the album narrative she is so much more. She represents a rebel with a cause, purposeful, idealistic, driven, everything Jesus (Johnny) wants to be but isn’t. It wasn’t just that he was attracted to her, he wanted to be her. I wish the musical would have captured this depth of meaning instead of it just being a relationship destroyed by his drug addiction. All the women were portrayed pretty much as vehicles for the boys’ stories. Pregnant abandoned girlfriends, angel savior types, etc. very tropey. The album did a better job than that. Billie has enormous respect for the women in his life and it comes through in his music.
I was lucky enough to see it when it came to London for a short run a few years ago and I really loved it. I mean, I guess there’s something to be said for the fact that since it’s Green Day I was probably always going to enjoy it to some degree. That being said I thought that the musical also reflected quite well the feeling of the album generally and the social issues it addresses that were prevalent in the early 2000’s (war, addiction etc). If another run was put on in the UK I would definitely go again.
However, I think if you aren’t really a fan of musicals it might not be your cup of tea, just because the songs are put together differently and not everyone is a fan of the style. I really like them, it’s kind of me and my mum’s thing to go together as well.
This is a good point actually about the female characters, I thought overall the storyline was good and I liked it but yeah this is pretty accurate. It was probably at least 8 years ago when I saw it so my recollection is somewhat foggy lol.
I will never get over the movie not being made, I would have loved to have seen the musical with Billie Joe in it, the footage we have seen shows just how amazing he was and it kills me that it was never filmed and released.
Just the nature of the industry. It was green lit but ultimately just never happened and tbh given HBO’s catalog it makes sense why it never happened. Closest show like it is Euphoria right now and I dont think the show about an almost 20 yeat old album would have pulled the numbers HBO wanted
I think if they updated the story a bit, took some artistic licence so to speak, perhaps it would do better. Doubt that they would bother now but I can live in hope
