So there’s a new commercial going around for next year’s Superbowl that features Waiting in it. If Green Day are licensing music to the NFL, do you think they are eyeing the Superbowl halftime show for 2024? Let’s look at the evidence:
They’ve already done an NFL regular season kickoff show with U2 years ago, and didn’t they do like a playoff game with the musical cast? More recently, they’ve done the NHL All Star game, the NFL Honors awards Superbowl weekend and another Superbowl weekend music fest show with Miley. They’ve been dancing around this for years, inching ever closer. Now they’ve licensed a song for an ad for next year’s Superbowl.
Looking at the management side, when they switched from Pat Magnarella to Crush in 2017, they asked them what they could do for them, what do they still want to achieve that they haven’t in their careers. They answered they wanted to do a full stadium tour. Crush made it happen and it was a success (despite covid, it made a ton of money). So what’s next they may be asking. What haven’t they done yet?
Well they have a new album out this year sometime and will be looking for big promotional opportunities for at least the next year or more. They may feel the time is right to do that Superbowl halftime show they haven’t done yet. It would cement them as a legendary band and remind people they’re still around and putting out new music. I think it could be good timing.
Well that’s the thing fans have wanted to see them do it for years but I wonder if they haven’t because they felt that was a late career move and the time wasn’t right before but is now.
It’s certainly possible, but it’s way too early to know for sure. I feel like it would be difficult to do an entire Super Bowl Halftime Show while doing a tour for 1972, but then again I’m not exactly an expert on halftime show logistics lol.
A late career move would have felt more appropriate (for lack of a better word) in the RevRad era. So yeah, it’s long overdue at this point, and I hope we get to see it.
Well if they plan for it we’re talking February 2024. We don’t know when they’ll tour but it’s possible they could announce an album this spring and start promo, tour the US this summer and fall, take a break in Jan/Feb (do the Superbowl) and then go off to Europe/Asia/World in Spring/Summer 2024.
Honestly I wonder if their former manager didn’t have the ability to make it happen. There were some problems there, maybe they needed to make a change for many reasons.
The ONLY way that I’d consider watching the super bowl is if Green Day did the half time show. I’ve never been interested in football nor will I ever be. Lol
I have no doubt Green Day would do it in a heartbeat if asked but it’s not an easy slot to book especially for a rock band in the current music landscape.
If you look at the performers since The Who in 2010 almost all have been pop and rap stars. The only bands that have played since then are Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Coldplay and Maroon 5. All three were combined with pop stars like Beyoncé, Bruno Mars and the rapper Travis Scott.
So I don’t know if we’d get a solo Green Day halftime show but if they combined with someone like Miley Cyrus I could see it happening.
I honestly don’t know if they would do it if they were asked to be paired with someone like a Machine Gun Kelly though.
I was gonna say I wonder if they’d have someone perform with them and if so, I wonder who. Miley would actually be an interesting addition, and now I really want to see this hypothetical performance lol.
I immediately groaned at the thought of them being paired with a pop artist, but it they were to be paired with someone who’s popular today, Billie Eilish would work.
