Album 14 - news, rumours & speculation

What is 1972?

Green Day have posted several video teases with each featuring new song snippets and the suspected album title of “1972”. I can now confirm however that they do not have a title selected yet for the new record.

When would it be released?

Billie Joe was quoted by Kerrang Magazine that the new record will likely be released in 2023.

When and where was it recorded?

It’s revealed in the first teaser video that the first part of 1972 was recorded at RAK Studios in London, England. Billie Joe and Tre were recording in Studio 1 at RAK in late October 2021. Mike Dirnt did not make the trip and most likely recorded his parts at a home studio or the band’s studio OTIS. The band later resumed recording sessions back in California at Ocean Way Recordings.

Who is producing the new record?

It has been confirmed that Rob Cavallo (Dookie, American Idiot, etc) is producing the album alongside Green Day. Cavallo last worked with the band on the Uno/Dos/Tre album trilogy.

It’s been so long that I have to wonder that something has changed. We know Billie said probably 2023 for release but have they ever teased anything this long before? It appeared to start out as 6 songs, do we know it’s to be a full album?

It’s a bit confusing because it originally started with being a 6 song EP of leftover FOAM songs and then Butch Walker said he was getting ready to do the new Green Day album and then all of a sudden they are teasing from the studio and Cavallo is back in the fold.

I have nothing to support this theory but my guess is the reaction to FOAM wasn’t what they expected and they eventually just decided to move on from those songs and Walker. The fact that they haven’t even played a single song from FOAM since February 10, 2020, 3 days after the album was released, is telling.

As for the release, I think they wanted to close off the Hella Mega era and take a break before releasing the new album in the Spring and then a full summer tour in support. If I had to guess I’d say first single in early February, second single beginning of April and then a third single shortly before a May or June album release.

I personally think it’ll be like an 80s pop rock album sounding like no fun Mondays

Doubt it, it will sound more like revolution radio likely

I also think it’ll sound like 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours

That seems unlikely lol that was over 30 years ago now

Oh boy, more endless 1972 speculation! I actually love this, even though I need this new album like air. New Green Day music still gets me ridiculously excited and these hints make it seem like they’re just as stoked. Judging by the clips, I’d say they’re going for that “classic” AI-era Green Day sound, even if they’re not trying to make another AI. I can’t wait for the new year and they get active online again.

Even if they are trying to sound like mid-2000’s GD, I think you’re right and it will still come out sounding like RevRad.

It’s the right of a GD fan to never be happy, lol. They want the band to experiment, but in a very particular way. Personally I wouldn’t call RevRad “safe” so much as inconsistent. I like most of it, love some of it, but it also has a couple of skips for me and for a GD album that is very unusual.

I thought revrad was just ok at the time but it seems better with time. Like bang bang is one of their best singles ever I wish more of the album was like that.

Bang Bang is probably one of my top 10 favourite songs by them and it wasn’t that long ago which is why I still have a lot of hope for the new record. From what I’ve heard, along with the previews we’ve got and Cavallo coming back - I think 1972 is gonna be really, really good.

I wish I could! Out of respect for the band I will not say anything but once the album is out I’d be glad to tell the tale.
